Liga MB Round 17 (Regular Season): Cojute beat Ahuachapan by two after a very close game

The most exciting game of round 17 in the Liga MB took place in Ahuachapan. This derby game ended with only two-point home defeat of 8th ranked Ahuachapan (4-14) to seventh ranked Cojute (6-12) 78-76 in the game for the seventh place. Cojute made 22-of-28 free shots (78.6 percent) during the game. Strangely Ahuachapan outrebounded Cojute 45-32 including 33 on the defensive glass. Puerto Rican guard Hector Maldonado (185-1991, agency: DON TECA SPORTS CONNECTION) orchestrated the victory by scoring 35 points (!!!) and 8 rebounds. American center Troidell Carter (206-1991, college: Slippery Rock) contributed with 16 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. Cojute's coach used an eleven-player rotation in such tough game. American guard Mike Jr Wright (201, college: Providence, MT, agency: Fully Feared Sports) answered with a double-double by scoring 25 points and 13 rebounds for Ahuachapan. Cojute maintains seventh place with 6-12 record. Ahuachapan at the other side keeps the eighth position with 14 games lost.
Another exciting game was a derby match between two teams from San Salvador: San Salvador (#3) and Salvadorenos (#5). Salvadorenos were defeated at home 69-82 and even the advantage of their own court did not help. American forward Sean Scott (190-1997, college: Pfeiffer) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 18 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners and William Merino chipped in 13 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Guard Diego Minero (187-2007) responded with 19 points and 7 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. San Salvador (14-4) have an impressive series of six victories in a row. They moved-up to second place, which they share with A.Lobos. Salvadorenos lost third consecutive game. They keep the fifth position with eight games lost.
Very important is a road loss of second ranked A.Lobos (14-4) against eighth ranked Ahuachapan (4-14) on Tuesday night. Visiting A.Lobos were defeated by Ahuachapan in a tough game in Ahuachapan 81-90. It ended at the same time the seven-game winning streak of A.Lobos. Kadeim Jones nailed 33 points (!!!) and 6 assists for the winning side. Marc Montavious came up with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 20 rebounds for A.Lobos in the defeat. Ahuachapan maintains eighth place with 4-14 record. Loser A.Lobos keep the second position with four games lost. They share it with San Salvador.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 17: Salvadorenos were beaten by Metapan on the road 80-62. Brujos lost to Metapan on its own court 84-92. Cojute unfortunately lost to Santa Tecla in a road game 86-103. Santiagueno managed to beat Santa Ana at home 78-71.

They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Cuban forward Yoel Cubillas (204-1994) nailed a double-double by scoring 31 points and 13 rebounds for the winning side and center Brayan Garcia (200-1998) accounted for 14 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists. Four Metapan players scored in double figures. point guard Diego Rivera (175-2007) came up with 21 points and Gerardo Medrano added 8 points and 6 rebounds respectively for Salvadorenos in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. The victory was the thirteenth consecutive win for Metapan. They maintain first place with 17-1 record. Very expected game when 6th ranked Brujos (9-9) lost to first ranked Metapan (17-1) in Izalco 84-92 on Wednesday. Metapan outrebounded Brujos 49-33 including a 17-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. Metapan looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists. Cuban forward Yoel Cubillas (204-1994) nailed 40 points (!!!) and 24 rebounds for the winning side and Josue Avila (197-1998) accounted for 22 points and 10 rebounds. American guard Brent Kelly (185-2000, college: Nichols, agency: Fully Feared Sports) came up with 24 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals and the other American import point guard Tiyon Martin (175, college: Webber) added 17 points and 7 assists respectively for Brujos in the defeat.
